One is Never Enough because...
...none are allowed • the problem with diet mentality • Intuitive Eating Principle #1
“One is never enough because none are allowed!” It’s the phrase that kicked off the transformation of my food relationship and I just blurted it out without even thinking.
Ten years ago, I was with Abbi, my friend and hair stylist, sitting in her chair. As usual we were deeply engaged in our favorite topics: food and cooking and our shared desire to feel good in our bodies. I didn’t realize it at the time, but my idea of “feeling good” was itself distorted and part of my dis-ease with food.
“Write that down!” she said.
Right then and there, back when I tried to hide from my gray, came the epiphany: when a food is forbidden/”bad”/off-plan, it is impossible to stop thinking about it. It is impossible to have just one whatever it is, cookie, pastry, glass of wine.
Logically, I knew nothing was wrong with eating a beautifully made pastry like those from the new Wild Crumb bakery (established 2013), or even one of their demi-baguette turkey sandwiches. But deep down, bread was a no-no in my mind and if I ate the croissant, there would certainly be no sandwich, and if I ate either, there was no way I could have bread or rice or pasta with dinner.
I began to wonder, what if dieting and all the food rules were the whole problem? I decided to do an experiment—when hungry, eat what I wanted to eat, put it on a plate, sit down, and enjoy it. That was the end of dieting for me. It was a major breakthrough.
Intuitive Eating Principe #1: Reject the Diet Mentality
What’s wrong with dieting? It distracts us from what is essential to health: our connection to our body.
Check out the research in the Intuitive Eating book, a huge side benefit to Evelyn Tribole’s and Elyse Resch’s decades of private practice. Intuitive Eating is comprised of 10 inter-dynamic principles which (work wonderfully! AND) can be studied scientifically as they have been and continue to be, worldwide! A shocking finding about why diets don’t work in the long run: they slow metabolism by decreasing a body’s muscle to fat ratio! Yikes! That’s not what we need!
